Google is launching a brand-new Android feature for advanced users, which will give them more power over the installation of applications that are not from the Play Store. This move is simply one of the steps through the company's more extensive developer verification effort that aims at reducing the number of scams and malware that infiltrate the Android ecosystem.

The new setup will still impose the requirement for the developers to undergo identity verification before their apps are allowed to be installed by the users, even in the case of sideloading. Nevertheless, a new "advanced flow" is being developed for allowing tech-savvy users to circumvent the warnings after they have acknowledged the risks involved. Google has stated that the option is meant for developers and power users only, not the average consumer.

“This flow is designed to resist coercion so that users are not forced to bypass the safety checks,” a spokesperson for Google said. "Users will be given clear warnings so that they are aware of the risks involved but the final choice will be up to them.” The feature is still at the initial stage of development, and Google is gathering input from the developer community before a wider release.

The corporation pointed out that the developer verification system has been very successful in diminishing the total of malicious acts on Google Play. By asking for identities that can be verified, Google maintains, it becomes a lot harder for miscreants to get their harmful apps distributed. The method taken is dealing with threats like social engineering scams that have been more and more common in places like Southeast Asia. One of the methods is that scammers impersonate bank employés and convince victims to download bogus verification apps that steal the authentication codes and thereby, access the accounts.

“If there’s no verification, harmful apps can pop up in no time and the cycle of attacks would be unceasing,” Google warned.

The new system intends to provide these safeguards not only for the Play Store apps but also for the entire Android ecosystem, thus guaranteeing accountability. Google reported that it would also introduce a new type of account for students and hobbyists that would permit app distribution without full verification—allowing the platform to be somewhat open.

Through the implementation of the advanced user flow, Google intends to provide developers with the flexibility they need while at the same time securing everyday users, thus allowing the installation of safer apps while maintaining the technical freedom for more proficient Android users.
